Floods claimed up to 60 deaths, caused 22 missing persons and ravaged some ten thousand houses in the Vietnamese central region by late October 7.

Quang Binh Province has remained the hardest-hit with 39 fatalities and 18 missing, while as many as 100 communes in six local districts are still underwater. The poverty-stricken province is estimated to have suffered more than VND1 trillion (USD50.76 million) in damages.
Currently, roughly 2,000 residents in Tan Hoa Commune, Minh Hoa District, are still living in caves and shelters on mountains. Many of them have become ill after fighting with the deluge for five days.
According to the latest report from the National Centre for Hydro-metrological Forecasting, despite decreased rainfall from Ha Tinh to Thua Thien-Hue provinces, water levels on Ngan Sau River and the basin of Kien Giang River stood high. People in the central region continue facing severe damages.
Up to 39 communes in Ha Tinh Province are covered with water, mostly in Huong Khe, Vu Quang and Huong Son districts. Meanwhile, the overflow at Ho Ho Hydropower Plant is threatening tens of thousands of locals.
By late October 6, nearly 1,500 households in Thua Thien-Hue Province were flooded. Quang Dien District had 150 hectares of vegetables and rice ravaged.
The Prime Minister has urged authorities of the provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Thua Thien-Hue to provide bottled water and instant noodles for the flood-stricken households.
The Ministry of Defense has sent seven flights to transport 5.6 tonnes of instant noodles and clean water to isolated areas in Quang Binh Province. The army forces have also saved 48 sailors on six ships encountering accidents at sea.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has given chemicals to help these localities with sterlisation. The Ministry of Health has offered medicine, nearly 1,000 life-jackets and lifebuoys and 500,000 tablets of Cloramin B for households from Nghe An to Thua Thien-Hue Province.
The Ministry of Education and Training on October 7 launched a movement to support the central region. It received a donation of VND143 million at the launching ceremony.
