Fisherfolk in Song Cau Ward, Dak Lak Province are rushing to harvest lobsters to minimise losses as Typhoon Kalmaegi approaches.

Many households began harvesting days earlier after forecasts warned the storm could affect the south central coast.

According to local fishers, lobster prices have dropped by about VND 40,000 to VND 70,000 per kilogram. Green lobster is currently purchased at VND 750,000 per kilogram (approximately USD 30) compared with the previous price of VND 820,000 per kilogram (approximately USD 33).

Quang, a trader buying lobsters in bulk, said purchasing before landfall is risky but helps share losses with coastal communities who may be heavily impacted.

Besides selling stock, many households are moving cages closer to shore where terrain offers better wind shelter. They are also reinforcing mooring systems and metal frames to prevent equipment from being swept away.

Song Cau has been known for lobster farming since the 1990s. In 2023, the locality had nearly 63,000 cages producing about 2,100 tonnes, accounting for 55 per cent of Vietnams total lobster output, with a total estimated value of VND 2,000 billion (approximately USD 79 million).

The national hydro-meteorological agency forecasts that from the evening of November 6, coastal areas from Hue to Dak Lak may face storm tides, strong waves and flooding in low-lying zones. All boats and aquaculture facilities in the region will be exposed to thunderstorms, strong winds, rough seas and storm surges.

To ensure safety at sea, Dak Lak has issued a ban on fishing vessels from 12 wards and communes heading offshore starting November 5.
