VND640,000 ($30) is the minimum savings if a house wife cuts down on energy and recycle waste, according to a handbook of green tips prepared by Dang Huynh Mai Anh, a student at the Ho Chi Minh City Foreign Trade University.

The 16-page handbook is printed in colors with catchy designs and vivid illustrations. It features tips on cutting down on electricity, gas and water use simply by changing daily habits, recycling PET bottles and newspapers, and minimizing food waste. The advantages of recycling and what it takes to do so, as well as the exact amount of savings it brings are also listed in the book.
To create the handbook Mai Anh, together with her friends, carried out surveys with housewives to find out their needs and how to present the content in the book. She collected the tips from different sources and applied them in her household before introducing them to everyone.
The first edition was published in early July, and 5000 more books of the second edition will be released soon, along with more additions and results from further surveys. The handbooks are distributed to the housewives at some residential areas and super markets in the city’s Phu Nhuan district. It is also available online in the form of an ebook so that everyone can download it.
Besides revising the book’s content, Mai Anh also created and is managing a page called “Green housework” on the social network Facebook where people who care about living green can come and share their tips to cut down energy costs and to save the environment.
