Top Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem

Liem’s advancement on the FIDE rating was attributed to his stuning performance as a member of the Webster University team at the 2016 Final Four of College Chess that took place in New York on April 2-3.

The Vietnamese chess star played brilliantly as captain, recording three straight wins over Arthur Shen of Columbia University, Anto Kovalov of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and Zherebukh of Texas Tech University, which earned him an additional 8.5 elo points.

Liem was also named the most valuable player of the Final tournament for his three wins.

The new ranking, however, is not Liem’s personal best as he sat 25th in the world in October 2011 with an Elo rating of 2717.

Right after the New York campaign, Liem flied to Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates for the 2016 Asian Nations Chess Cup where he joined other national team members to take the men’s rapid silver medal for Vietnam.
