Can Tho Bridge transformed into a trail of rubbish

The largest cable-stayed bridge in Southeast Asia was covered with rubbish left behind by visitors after a long holiday weekend.

After a long holiday weekend, Can Tho Bridge was covered with rubbish left behind by visitors.

Rubbish discarded along the bridge...
...all the way out to the roads leading up to the bridge.

From end to end, the bridge was left blanketed with various rubbish such as plastic bags, bottles, and food containers, all mindlessly discarded all the way up to the two roads which lead to the bridge.

Many people carelessly dumped every sort of rubbish imaginable without the slightest regard for keeping the bridge clean.

One visitor shared in discontent, "We just wanted to take a picture that we could keep for our memories, but with this much rubbish lying around everywhere, it just seems like an impossible thing to do."

A motorbike taxi driver then said, "We can't really blame the visitors, because there had been nothing for them to dump their rubbish in on the bridge. Where could they dump it? Down to the river? To prevent this from happening again, the only way is to ban street vendors from doing their businesses on the bridge."

However, the bridge was not the only area affected by this disgraceful sight. Rubbish was strewn along to nearby houses, yards and ponds, on both sides of the bridge.

Phuong, whose house is on Vinh Long shore, expressed her anger, "Over the past few days, rubbish had been falling like rain onto our roof, and not just us, many others. On top of the roof, in front of our yard, rubbish was everywhere!"

Nam, residing on Can Tho shore, said, "In the morning, I found about 5 - 6 coconut shells lying around my house. It's fortunate that they threw it over at night. If they did during the day, someone could be seriously injured by one of these flying coconut shells!"

Hearing these complaints, Phan Quang Du, General Director of a Limited Company, who is in charge of the management of Can Tho Bridge said, "We had coordinated with the Urban Construction Company to organise a rubbish-collecting truck to come daily, but due to the number of visitors that came, a large amount of rubbish was left behind around the bridge, and we just haven't been able to completely have it cleaned and cleared yet."

Can Tho Bridge is a pride not only to the people of Can Tho - Vinh Long, but also to the whole nation of Vietnam. However, since the bridge's inauguration, not enough actions have been taken to prevent these kinds of problems from occurring. The reputation of this bridge, known as the largest cable-stayed bridge in Southeast Asia, as a result, has been significantly harmed.
