Residents in HCM City had to wade through the water to go to schools and workplaces. The tides are forecasted to reach its peak of 1.7 metres in the afternoon. Hundreds of people were badly affected after a 30-metre embankment on Me Coc Street broke.
Nguyen Mai Trung, chairman of Ward 15 said they had sent 150 employees to fix the embankment with sandbags. They are also reviewing the damages to offer timely help to those in need.
Can Tho City was also flooded on the same day. The water started rising from 6 am and deeply flooded many streets by 7.30 am. Ly Tu Trong, Tran Hung Dao and Mau Than streets were under 50 cm to nearly one metre of water.
Nguyen Van Oanh, a resident on Tran Quang Dieu, said their house was only 2 km away from the school but it took them nearly an hour to wade through the water and traffic. Some shops and stores were closed why employees at workplaces had to move furniture to a higher place to work.
The water started to recede at 8.30 am. According to the locals, this is the worst flooding they have ever known. Other southern provinces like Vinh Long and An Giang were also flooded. Since the farmers put up embankments around the fields to protect their crops, the water was forced to the cities.
