Buddhists hold night-long festival for flood victims in the name of peace

10,000 flower garlands and coloured lanterns were on display for a night dedicated to peace and raising money for victims of the central flooding that slammed Vietnam in recent months.

The night festival, which was held by the Vietnam Central Buddhist Congregation in nothern Hai Phong City. The event attracted over 5,000 participants including monks and local Buddhists.

According to Superior Buddhist Monk Thich Thanh Dien, head of the organising board, the night festival was lit up by 500 young Buddhists who are students and 500 other local Buddhists.

“We want to pray for peace in the world in general and Vietnam in particular, for souls of Vietnamese soldiers who died during the last two wars,” Superior Monk Thich Thanh Dien said. “And especially, we want to invite donations from the public to support flood victims in the central region.”

The superior monk said that the fund raising programme would last until December 20. Donations should be sent to Vietnam Central Buddhist Congregation at 73 Quan Su Street, Hanoi or its branch in Hai Phong City at 197 Hai Ba Trung Street.

The night festival was lit up by 500 young Buddhists who are students.
