Additional 5,000 more Covid-19 patients recover, new infections rise

Vietnam confirmed 10,654 more Covid-19 infections on Thursday which showed an increase of nearly 2,000 cases compared to yesterday's figure. An additional 5,000 patients recovered from the disease the same day.

According to a report from the Ministry of Health, 10,639 of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in some localities such as Ho Chi Minh City (4,425 cases), Binh Duong (3,255), Dong Nai (657), Long An (545), Tien Giang (478), Dong Thap (185), Danang (164), Khanh Hoa (151), Can Tho (134), Tay Ninh (102), An Giang (70), Vinh Long (60), and Hanoi (53). Among these new infections, 6,407 cases were found in the community. There were 15 imported patients recorded.

Ho Chi Minh City continued to report the highest number of new infections in the country. On Wednesday, the city also recorded 3,731 new patients. Social distancing rules are being further tightened in the city to contain the spread of the virus. The government has set a target for HCM City to contain its Covid-19 outbreak by September 15.

As of Thursday evening, 308,559 locally-transmitted cases have been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country on April 27, including 164,342 in the virus hotspot of Ho Chi Minh City. The outbreak has so far spread to 62 cities and provinces nationwide.

With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 312,611. The country stands 72nd among 222 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections.

On August 19, an additional 5,000 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 120,059.

Also on Thursday evening, a further 380 deaths related to Covid-19 were announced, bringing the total number of fatalities in Vietnam to 7,150. The deaths were reported in HCM City (307), Binh Duong (45), Long An (17), Can Tho (3), Ben Tre (2), Binh Thuan (2), Tien Giang (2), and Vinh Long (2).

The country has so far conducted over 15.92 million Covid-19 vaccine shots, with over 1.56 million people having received two doses.
