Nghe An provincial police are investigating the the origin of a grenade that was left in a landfill and found by a boy, seriously injuring him and his sister.

The incident occurred on on October 31, when a 12-year-old boy and his sister found the explosive in a trash heap in Ben Thuy Ward, Vinh City.
According to investigators, the boy took the grenade, mistaking it as a toy, from his friend. His friend found the grenade near a dump at site near Lam River.
His hand was severely injured, while his sister, who was sitting nearby, received slighter injuries. The boy is still being treated at 108 Military Hospital. His sister has since been released.

While investigating, police found the grenade relatively intact with its plastic casing. It also contained sand. Investigators found some aluminum parts they believe to be from the device. One investigator commented, "This definitely was not a toy sold in markets. It could be a remnant from wartime or something used during military drills."
