An Agribank representative announced on April 26 that they were working with the police to investigate the case and sealed up all ATMs that were used to withdraw the money. They will also search for information from security cameras.Agribank promised to protect the interests of their customers. The customers that had their accounts hacked are employees of Nhan Dan Newspaper and the accounts are used to pay salaries. After receiving messages that their money was being withdrawn, many people reported the incident and the bank began to lock the accounts, but the withdrawals continued.
A customer said she received eight messages in six minutes and a total of VND24m (USD960) had been withdrawn from her account. After the reported accounts were locked, she was still able to withdraw the money from ATM machines while others couldn't.
According to Agribank, because of the huge amount of reported accounts, they couldn't lock all of them in time. Customer data might have been stolen when they withdrew money at ATMs previously.
"If it's not customers' fault then, of course, we'll fully compensate the account owners," an Agribank representative said.
