Huong Phung Commune was covered in thick mist as of 8.15 am, hindering the mission. However, the nearly 500 people who joined the search and rescue mission were determined to find all the soldiers on October 19. Major-general Ha Tan Tien, vice head of the Military zone 4 directed the search and rescue mission. 18 vehicles were used in the mission.
All bodies were found as of 2.30 pm. The ambulance fleet helped bring the bodies to the Dong Ha City Multi-purpose Gymnasium to prepare for funeral services.
At 1 am on October 18, the Army Economic Group 337's dormitory, canteen and other areas were buried in a landslide. Five people were saved but 22 people were buried. 14 bodies were found by 9 pm on the same day. Due to heavy rain and lack of light, the search and rescue mission was halted that evening.
The authorities also cleared the roads so that vehicles and equipment could access the site.
