Construction of the Nam Thang Long-Tran Hung Dao metro section was initially set to begin in 2015 but has been delayed for various reasons.
The initial investment for the section has risen to VND35.588 trillion (USD1.4 billion), up from VND19.55 trillion, following approval by the prime minister in January.
Of the total investment, ODA loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) amount to VND29 trillion, while the remainder comes from Hanoi's reciprocal capital.
The total route length is 11.5 kilometres, including 8.9 kilometres underground and 2.6 kilometres elevated, with seven underground and three elevated stations.
The project is expected to be completed in 2032.
Metro Line 2 will connect the inner city, Noi Bai International Airport, and the northern urban areas of Hanoi. It consists of three sections including Nam Thang Long-Tran Hung Dao (Line 2.1), Tran Hung Dao-Thuong Dinh (Line 2.2), and Noi Bai-Nam Thang Long (Line 2.3).
