Specifically, the section from HCM City to Trung Luong will be expanded into eight lanes, and the Trung Luong-My Thuan section will be increased to six lanes.

Since its opening in 2011, the 91-kilometre-long route connecting HCM City to the Mekong Delta region has been operating at full capacity, especially during peak times and holidays, underscoring the pressing need for its expansion.

The expansion is expected to meet travel demand, promote socio-economic development and ensure transport connectivity between HCM City and neighbouring regional provinces.

In 2020, the expressway's degraded road surface was repaired with upgraded lighting, costing tens of billions of VND, according to Vietnam News Agency.
