A representative of the Northern Airports Authority said the temporary closure of Vinh International Airport is essential and cannot be postponed. Years of continuous operation have seriously degraded its infrastructure, affecting flight safety and passenger service quality.
The Vinh International Airport upgrade project, valued at nearly VND 1 trillion (USD 38.28 million), comprises runway and taxiway repairs, aircraft apron expansion, and renovation of the domestic terminal.
Severe runway damage at Vinh International Airport, with large sections of asphalt concrete cracked and broken, has forced a temporary closure to ensure flight safety and allow urgent repairs and upgrades.
Trailer trucks carrying construction machinery have gathered in front of the airport to prepare for the repair work. The presence of drilling, excavating, and bulldozing equipment signalled the official start of the airport’s renovation and upgrade project.
All ground service vehicles are now idle, awaiting the airport’s reopening after the completion of infrastructure upgrades.
An estimated VND 623 billion will be allocated to extend the runway to 3,000 metres, enabling it to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A330 and Boeing 787. Meanwhile, the VND 236 billion apron upgrade will add nine parking stands for A320 and A321 aircraft.
Vinh International Airport is a key transport hub in the northern central region of Vietnam. Its upgrade is expected to boost tourism, logistics, and investment, supporting Nghe An’s goal of becoming a regional growth centre.
The project is scheduled for completion within six months.
