According to the owner of the ST25 rice variety, Ho Quang Cua, his rice beat 30 rice varieties from over 10 countries. A rice variety from Cambodia won the second prize and another from India won third prize
This was the second time the ST25 variety won the world's best rice title after its initial win in 2019. It also won second prize in 2020's contest.
The ST25 rice variety was created by Ho Quang Cua and his research team from Soc Trang Province who cross-bred the premium fragrant rice, described as having a sweet taste and a hint of pineapple flavour. The variety is currently managed by the Ho Quang Tri Private Company which is owned by Cua's son.
