Vehicles of over 16 seats banned in Hanoi's Old Quarter

Vehicles with more than 16 seats are banned from entering areas around Hoan Kiem Lake and Hanoi's Old Quarter during rush hours.

Duong Duc Tuan, vice chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, said the decision was made after the municipal Department of Transport proposed it.

Under the proposal, the pilot ban will take effect from March 1, applying daily from 6.30-8.30 am and 4.30-6.30 pm.

After the six-month trial, authorities will evaluate its effectiveness before making an official decision.

Vehicles with more than 16 seats will be prohibited on the streets of Hang Giay, Dong Xuan, Hang Duong, Hang Ngang, Hang Dao, Dinh Tien Hoang, Hang Dau, Tran Nhat Duat, and Nha Chung.

According to the Hanoi Department of Transport, the vehicle ban will help ease traffic congestion in the Old Quarter, especially during peak hours, and contribute to environmental protection.

Hanoi is establishing a low-emission zone in the Hoan Kiem and Ba Dinh districts. It plans to ban fossil fuel-powered vehicles from the Old Quarter and the area around Hoan Kiem Lake.

Hoan Kiem Lake covers approximately 12 hectares and is surrounded by Dinh Tien Hoang, Ly Thai To, and Hang Khay streets.
