Quang Binh coastline erodes, damaging shrimp farms

The coastline spanning nearly two kilometres in the central province of Quang Binh has suffered significant erosion after Storm Trami devastated numerous shrimp farms.

The coastline section runs through Thanh Xuan Village in Bo Trach District.

Erosion has been evident in the area since early this year, but it has intensified following the impact of Storm Trami.

Vo Ba Phu, a resident, said that the erosion had destroyed his family’s three shrimp farms, causing losses of VND2 billion (USD79,000).

Erosion has also threatened 450 households, totalling 1,800 residents, in the villages of Thanh Xuan, Thanh Hai, and Thanh Gianh in Thanh Trach Commune.

Meanwhile, erosion has damaged part of a nearly protective forest.

The chairman of Thanh Trach Commune, Luu Duc Huan, said that a solid coastal embankment is necessary to prevent erosion in the area. However, this would require substantial investment, which locally was unaffordable. If timely measures are not taken, the situation will worsen.

Hoang Minh Thai, Chairman of the Bo Trach District People’s Committee, stated that he has inspected the eroded area and requested that concerned units report the situation to the provincial people’s committee for consideration.
