Parking lots managed by police in HCM City have continued to be overloaded with hundreds of thousands of vehicles seized in traffic violators.
The 20,000-square-metre parking lot in Binh Chanh District is the largest of its kind built by HCM City police for keeping seized vehicles.
The facility was designed for 17,000 vehicles but has become overloaded over the years.
Newly seized vehicles have now been placed outdoors or piled up several metres high.
Colonel Le Manh Ha from the HCM City Police Department said that they seized up to nearly 155,000 vehicles in 2023 so all their parking lots have been overloaded. "As we have intensified check-ups and fines on drunk driving, many violators have abandoned their vehicles as the fines they would have to pay were higher than the value of their vehicles," Ha explained.
Some 10 kilometres away from the Binh Chanh parking lot, another lot managed by Binh Tan District Police Department has also been overloaded with thousands of vehicles.
Motorbikes, homemade tricycles, and trucks of all kinds have become rusty and covered by wild grass after being kept outdoors for many years at the 3,500-square-metre parking area.

The 1,000-square-metre lot managed by District 7 police department has also been full already with thousands of vehicles being covered by wild grass.
The situation has posed an environmental pollution problem. In 2022, as many as 2,200 motorbikes and cars were destroyed when a parking lot run by traffic police in Thu Duc City under HCM City caught fire.
