Kumquat trees are usually used for decorations during the Tet Lunar New Year Festival in Vietnam.

According to the Chairman of Son Tra District People's Committee, Hoang Son Tra, the programme is intended to avoid wastefulness as well as to protect the environment.

"Local people usually decorate their homes with kumquat trees during the Tet Lunar New Year Festival and dump them just a short time after that," the official said. "We've decided to launch this programme which calls on local residents, agencies and offices to gather the trees after the festival so that we can replant them."

The official said that the trees would be replanted in public parks and gardens where they can continue to decorate the city after the Tet festival.

"We're receiving the trees from February 4-11 at youth union branches in all wards in Son Tra District," he said.

A large number of bonsai trees which are mostly kumquat, peach, and apricot are abandoned after being used for decorations during the Tet Lunar New Year Festival nationwide every year, causing difficulties for environment workers who gather them to take to dumping sites.

Several groups have also launched programmes to gather the trees for replanting to raise people's awareness about environment protection and waste prevention.
