On March 2, a fishing vessel carrying 12 crew departed from the central city of Danang for a fishing trip. At around 3:20 am on March 4, while operating approximately 35 nautical miles off the Danang coast, a marlin suddenly jumped into the boat from the sea and struck the crew member.
The captain promptly provided first aid and took the victim to Tho Quang Port in Danang for emergency treatment, but the efforts were unsuccessful. The 46-year-old victim, a native of Hoai Nhon Town in Binh Dinh, passed away due to his severe injuries shortly after.
According to the Binh Dinh Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue, marlins are powerful predators inhabiting tropical and temperate waters. With a long, razor-sharp, sword-like snout, they can grow between 3 and 4.5 metres and reach speeds of up to 100 km/h, making them one of the fastest fish in the ocean.
