250-kilo bomb safely defused in Quang Tri

Authorities in the central province of Quang Tri have safely defused a bomb which was found near a residential in Huong Hoa District.

The bomb is safely defused on November 7.

The 250-kilo, 2.4-metre long MK82-bomb, which was left over from the American War, was found by border guard officers while patrolling near the Vietnam-Laos border.

Experts said that the bomb still had the detonator intact and a blast radius of 1.5 kilometres.

Authorities had to remove over 500 local residents on November 7 before defusing the bomb to ensure safety.

More than 40,000 people have been killed and 60,000 others injured due to unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Vietnam since the war ended in 1975.

It is estimated the country still had about 800,000 tonnes of UXO by 2023, and 17.70 percent (5.60 million hectares) of the country was still contaminated with UXO.
