Vung Tau begins trial run of new whale statue

The new whale statue in Vung Tau, HCM City, together with its fountain and lighting systems, is undergoing trial operations to check quality.

The whale statue located in Thuy Van Park in Tam Thang Ward is part of a major urban upgrade of Thuy Van coastal boulevard with total investment of over VND 1 trillion (USD 38 million).

The whale statue, cast in bronze and standing more than eight metres tall, is a key feature of the project, which also includes a public square, water features and decorative lighting. The statue alone costs more than VND 50 billion.

The sculpture was first produced at full scale for inspection before being cast using traditional bronze techniques in Ninh Binh Province. It was then transported in sections to Vung Tau for installation.

Designed to depict a whale surging powerfully from the sea, the monument features a curved body following the rhythm of waves, with fins spread wide. Developers said the greenish-blue finish was chosen to evoke a whale in open waters rather than polished bronze.

During the day, the statue is intended to stand out against the sky and sea, while at night it will be illuminated and synchronised with fountain effects to create a shimmering visual display.

The trial aims to verify technical performance before handover, with the statue expected to become a new landmark at Thuy Van Park on Vung Tau’s Back Beach.
