Vietnam railways cut fares after fuel price drop

Vietnam Railways will reduce passenger fares and freight charges from March 13 following a recent decline in domestic fuel prices.

The decision comes after the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Finance announced a reduction in retail fuel prices on March 11, effective from 10 pm the same day.

Petrol and oil prices fell by about 12.43 per cent compared with levels recorded at 3 pm on March 7.

According to the railway sector, passenger fares on all trains will be reduced by 3 per cent, while freight transport rates will be cut by 4 per cent.

Discounts for social beneficiaries will remain in place, including 90 per cent reductions for Vietnamese heroic mothers and pre-1945 revolutionaries, and 30 per cent discounts for people with meritorious service, war invalids and those with severe disabilities.

Additional concessions include a 15 per cent discount for Vietnamese citizens aged over 60 and a 25 per cent discount for children aged six to under 10. Children under six travelling with an adult will continue to travel free of charge.

Students at universities and colleges are also entitled to a 10 per cent discount on return tickets.

Earlier, on March 8, the railway sector increased passenger fares by 10 per cent and freight charges by 15 per cent following a sharp rise in domestic fuel prices.
