In a directive issued on May 7, the deputy prime minister tasked the construction minister with reviewing the proposal and ensuring sufficient grounds for the adjustment. Once conditions are met, the ministry approves the revised plan and reports to the prime minister.
Earlier, the Ministry of Construction proposed including Mang Den and Van Phong airports in the national aviation infrastructure plan.
Mang Den Airport is planned to be located in Mang Den Town, Kon Plong District, Kon Tum Province. The site lies approximately 45 km northeast of Kon Tum City, 73 km from Pleiku Airport, 105 km from Phu Cat Airport (Binh Dinh), and 93 km from Chu Lai Airport (Quang Nam). The proposed site is not in mountainous terrain and will cover around 350 hectares. The airport is expected to serve up to one million passengers annually by 2030 and be classified as a 4C-level facility, capable of handling aircraft such as the Airbus A320/321.
Van Phong Airport is planned for Van Thang Commune, Van Ninh District, Khanh Hoa Province, about 65 km north of Nha Trang City, 108 km from Cam Ranh Airport, and 48 km south of Tuy Hoa Airport (Phu Yen). The entire site covers approximately 497 hectares. The airport is designed with a capacity of 1.5 million passengers annually by 2030, with a long-term projection of 2.5 million by 2050. It will be a 4E-level facility, suitable for wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787.
The national airport development master plan for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, did not include Mang Den and Van Phong airports. They were classified as potential airports, subject to future inclusion once necessary conditions were met.
In April, the Ministry of Construction also approved the addition of Gia Binh International Airport (Bac Ninh Province) to the master plan.
