The Gia Lai People's Committee has instructed project developers to urgently complete all remaining construction work and administrative procedures so that the second runway at Phu Cat Airport can begin commercial operations on October 29.
According to provincial authorities, only a limited amount of work remains on the project. Contractors are currently mobilising personnel and equipment to accelerate progress and complete the final stages of construction in line with the planned opening schedule.
The project to build a second runway and associated infrastructure at Phu Cat Airport carries a total investment of more than VND 3.2 trillion (USD 123 million).
Once the upgrade is completed, the airport will be capable of handling Code C aircraft, including the Airbus A320, Airbus A321 and equivalent models.
Authorities said the airport could also accommodate larger Code E aircraft when operational demand requires.
The expansion is expected to enhance the airport's operational capacity, improve flight safety and support growing passenger and cargo demand in Vietnam's south-central region.
Phu Cat Airport is a key aviation gateway serving Gia Lai and neighbouring provinces, playing an increasingly important role in tourism, trade and regional economic development. The addition of a second runway is expected to strengthen connectivity and support future growth in air traffic across the region.
