Ho Chi Minh City to offer free public transport for four days on Tet

Ho Chi Minh City will provide four days of free public transport during Tet, increasing services to meet rising holiday travel demand and accommodate New Year’s Eve fireworks crowds.

The city’s Public Transport Management Centre said free travel will run from February 16-19 (the 29th day to the third day of Tet), covering 105 subsidised bus routes. Private operator Phuong Trang will also waive fares on several non-subsidised services, including routes 67, 109 and 172.

Metro Line 1, connecting Ben Thanh and Suoi Tien, will be free on February 16 and 17 (the 29th day and the first day of Tet).

To serve city-centre crowds and New Year’s Eve fireworks watchers, Metro Line 1 will increase services and extend hours.

During the February 7-26 Tet peak, 4,808 train trips are scheduled, with post-midnight departures on February 17 every four to six minutes from Ba Son, Opera House and Ben Thanh stations to disperse passengers.

From February 18 to 22, the metro will run 256 services per day; from February 23 to 26, 246 services daily, operating from 5 am to 11 pm.

Bus services will be adjusted in three phases: from February 7-15, 106 subsidised routes will boost trips, especially to coach stations and Tan Son Nhat International Airport; on February 16 operations will end at noon, while on February 17 buses will run from 8 am to 5 pm, with some routes starting as early as 3.30 am. Normal timetables will resume from February 22.

Airport and interprovincial bus links will operate as scheduled, with extra vehicles deployed if demand surges. Public bicycles will be added near Ben Thanh and Opera House stations, while the Bach Dang-Linh Dong river bus will step up operations to ensure safety amid higher passenger numbers.

Several student-oriented routes will be temporarily suspended during the holiday period.

Authorities said vehicles failing to meet safety standards will not be permitted to operate. Monitoring via cameras and GPS will be strengthened, and stations cleaned and secured in coordination with police.

Residents can check detailed schedules via the website buyttphcm.com.vn, the MultiGo app or the 1022 hotline (extension 9).
