The Hanoi people’s committee has endorsed a project covering a total study area of about 2,439 hectares, including 527.5 hectares of West Lake, around 700 hectares along the Red River and roughly 1,227.5 hectares of green space and water surface.

Under a vision to 2050, the city has identified four core values to preserve, focusing on heritage, tourism, green space and sustainable development. These will be developed along five growth corridors, including the West Lake-Ba Vi, West Lake-Co Loa, Red River, southern linkage and Nhat Tan-Noi Bai axes.

Hanoi has earmarked 32 potential land plots for development, including 19 for tourism, cultural and commercial services, seven for tourism and cultural projects and six for tourism-related ecosystems. The plan also includes five parks and eight designated scenic viewpoints around West Lake.

Six boat piers will be developed on the lake, including three main piers and three auxiliary ones. Initial investment will focus on sites near Ngoc Trai theatre, the ceramic dragon area and Nguyen Dinh Thi Street. Facilities will include docking platforms, walkways, waiting areas and landscaped green spaces.

To improve access and the overall landscape, the city plans to widen several lakeside roads to three or four lanes and build underground car parks at three stations on Metro Line 2.

West Lake is Hanoi’s largest natural lake and is surrounded by 22 listed historical and cultural relics, as well as traditional craft villages known for Yen Phu incense, Nhat Tan peach trees, Tu Lien kumquat and Quang An lotus.
