Chefs at Song Hau Farm Ecological Area in Can Tho City along with many others are preparing ingredients to make the Chung Cake.
The giant Chung Cake requires 600 kilos of sticky rice, 235 kilos of mung beans, and over 215 kilos of pork belly. Chefs also use more than 1,000 banana leaves, 1,800 Dong leaves, and bamboo strings for the cake. When finished, the cake is expected to weigh around 1.6 tonnes with thickness of 0.8 metres.

The sticky rice for the cake is cultivated by farmers at Song Hau Farm in Can Tho, while the mung beans are carefully selected from local sources. The cake will be wrapped in a wooden mold, then slow-boiled for over 20 hours to ensure its rich flavour and perfect texture.
What makes this Chung Cake special is the use of coconut milk and sugar in the sticky rice, adding a sweet southern touch unlike the salt-seasoned version typical of the northern region.
Cuong added that the cost of making the giant Chung Cake has to date reached VND137 million (USD5,356), funded by Song Hau Farm Ecological Area and Khanh Linh Restaurant.
The cake will be showcased at the Southern Traditional Cake Festival on April 5, where visitors can enjoy free servings.
The Southern Traditional Cake Festival is set to take place at Binh Thuy District Square and surrounding areas in Can Tho from April 4 to 8, corresponding to the 7th to 11th days of the third lunar month, which coincides with the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day.
