Double-decker bus firm seeks route to Long Thanh Airport

Anh Viet Hop on - Hop off, the operator of open-top double-decker tourist buses, has proposed launching a new shuttle route linking Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh Airport.

In a document sent to the Ministry of Construction, Airports Corporation of Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City authorities, the company said it currently operates sightseeing bus services in Hanoi, Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, Danang City and other localities, and works with partners across the Asian tourism market.

Under the proposal, the route would use 45-seat buses with an 8 cubic metre luggage compartment to serve passengers transferring between the two airports. The company suggested running the service every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day.

It said the buses would be equipped with modern facilities, multilingual support, a data synchronisation system with the airport, and an online booking and check-in platform modelled on international airport shuttle standards.

To accelerate implementation, the company asked authorities for guidance on licensing procedures, traffic diversion plans and the designation of pick-up and drop-off points along the route.

The proposal comes as the city considers wider plans for airport connectivity. Previously, the head of the Public Transport Management Centre said Ho Chi Minh City aims to open seven bus routes connecting different areas of the city with Long Thanh Airport this year, while metro lines remain under construction.

Of the seven routes, three would start from the former central Ho Chi Minh City area, two from the former Binh Duong Province and two from the former Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province. The three potential starting points in the former central area include Tan Son Nhat Airport, the New Mien Dong Bus Station and the Saigon Bus Station at September 23 Park.

In a report to the prime minister, the Ministry of Construction said Long Thanh Airport would initially rely only on road connections to Ho Chi Minh City in its first phase.

With phase 1 capacity expected to reach about 25 million passengers per year, the ministry said transfers between Long Thanh and Ho Chi Minh City, including Tan Son Nhat, would be ensured through road transport.

Rail links are expected to be developed after 2030 and are projected to handle about 30-40 per cent of transport demand.
