People gather on the bank of the Maspero River to watch a Ngo boat race during the Ok Om Bok Festival.

According to an announcement made by the Can Tho People’s Committee on March 10, the Maspero tourism street project will include a night market, pedestrian streets, a food street, a pedestrian bridge and landscaped riverbanks.

The development will run along Ly Thuong Kiet Street in Phu Loi Ward and Dien Bien Phu Street in Soc Trang Ward.

City authorities have instructed relevant agencies to conduct surveys and finalise a comprehensive design plan to ensure the project is consistent with the surrounding landscape and architecture.

A key component of the project will be a pedestrian bridge integrated with river embankments and stepped riverbank terraces. The structure must meet technical and load requirements while also serving as an architectural highlight reflecting the cultural identity of the Soc Trang area.

The first phase of the project is expected to use a budget of around VND 20 billion (about USD 800,000), while the second phase will seek investment from private sources. Authorities have requested that project documents be completed before March 20.

The Maspero River, also known as the Quay Bridge River, is a canal built nearly 120 years ago that flows through Soc Trang and Phu Loi wards. The waterway is closely tied to the lives of southern Khmer communities, particularly the traditional Ngo boat racing festival.

The race is the highlight of the Ok Om Bok Festival, held on the full moon of the 10th lunar month and attracting hundreds of thousands of residents and tourists each year.
