Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema spend an afternoon cruise on Halong Bay on August 21.
The royal couple and their delegation toured the UNESCO World Heritage Site aboard the Sea Star Cruise ship in Quang Ninh Province. They had lunch on board featuring Halong’s signature seafood before resting in the ship’s presidential suite, which costs nearly VND 100 million (approximately USD 3,940).
According to Sea Star’s manager, Duy Hau, preparations began more than a month in advance with close coordination between security forces, border guards, fire prevention units and the provincial Centre for Disease Control to ensure safety and hygiene.
Initially, the king planned to stay overnight on the vessel, but his schedule was adjusted as he had to board a flight at 9 am the following day. The visit was shortened to between 11 am and 2.30 pm. For safety and timing reasons, the group did not visit caves. However, it viewed landmarks including Dinh Huong, Trong Mai and Ngon Tay islets while dining and enjoying Vietnamese traditional music.
The royal family later rested in the luxury suite, which includes a main bedroom and a smaller room. Staff noted the king’s informal attire of jeans and trainers, and many were touched when the queen invited them to take photos together, a rare gesture.

Crew members said the king spent much of the trip photographing Halong Bay and his family, and expressed hope of returning for a more extended stay. Before leaving, the king gave the staff a generous tip, which they said reflected the couple’s appreciation.
The state visit by the Bhutanese king and queen took place from August 18 to August 22, marking their first official visit to Vietnam since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 2012.
