Hanoi's large poultry market faces avian flu outbreak risk

Ha Vi Poultry Market in Hanoi, the largest wholesale market of its kind in the northern region of Vietnam, faces a high risk of an avian flu outbreak due to the large volume of poultry traded daily.

The H5N1 avian flu situation remains complex in the region. Recently, the Cambodian Ministry of Health reported a fatality linked to an H5N1 infection.

The Hanoi People's Committee has instructed local districts to enhance disease surveillance, swiftly detect and contain outbreaks, and strictly penalize those who fail to report, conceal outbreaks, or transport and trade infected poultry.

Ha Vi Poultry Market houses over 150 poultry and waterfowl stalls. According to Le Van Chung, Deputy Head of the Ha Vi Poultry Market Management Board, the market receives around 35-45 tonnes of poultry daily. During the Tet Lunar New Year, this number can surge to 80 tonnes per day.

All poultry entering the market must have veterinary health certificates along with proper documentation verifying their origin. Each month, the market undergoes thorough sanitation, waste collection, and comprehensive disinfection to ensure a safe and hygienic environment.

However, the market continues to struggle with pollution. For instance, the canal in front of the market has been severely polluted. Sick poultry can still be seen at some stalls, with some even dying during transportation.

Avian flu mainly spreads among poultry but can occasionally transmit to humans and other animals.

People are advised to avoid consuming sick, dead, or uncertified poultry. They should also avoid slaughtering, transporting, or trading poultry of unknown origin. Anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, chest pain, or difficulty breathing should seek immediate medical attention.
