Tiny houses in HCM City downtown

For decades, people in the Gao and Ga market area in HCM City's District 1 have struggled to live in tiny 2-4 square metre houses.

Thach Thi Van Sa Minh, 68, said her family lives in a four-square-metre house. The living conditions are cramped and suffocating, but they cannot afford a new home.

"In the summer, the houses are similar to steam rooms due to being hit by harsh sunlight. Electric fans are useless," she said.

Authorities of District 1 held a meeting with businesses to discuss the Ga and Gao Market renovation project.

The area's space is minimal but cluttered with belongings, motorbikes, and poultry, making it difficult for residents to move around.

Most people use the hallway in front of their houses for cooking and daily activities.

This area has witnessed three fires, one of which, on December 1, 2015, destroyed eight houses and damaged five others.

All of the alleys in the area are very small, posing significant challenges for the firefighting force and potentially exacerbating the safety risks.

The Ga and Gao market covers a total of 3,384 square metres with 237 stalls and hundreds of houses.
