More houses donated to disadvantaged Mekong Delta people

Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper have just helped build two houses for two low income families l in the southern provinces of Hau Giang and Dong Thap.

The houses, which cost over VND200 million, were supported by Dantri/Dtinews' house construction programme for the families of Nguyen Van Phuong in Hau Giang and Quach Thanh Quang in Dong Thap.

Phuong's 32-square-metre house cost VND80 million including VND50 million donated by Dantri's programme to build new houses for disadvantaged people and VND30 million raised by local authorities.

At their new house, Phuong, who is facing lots of difficulties raising his small daughter alone after having tuberculosis and facing broken legs from a traffic accident, was moved to tears when receiving additional VND117 million from Dantri's readers.

"My health has badly deteriorated due to diseases and injuries and so I've spent all the savings on the treatment and can now earn a modest income from selling lottery tickets," he said. "I could never imagine having a new house without your support. Thank you so much for your help."

The man said that with the additional donated money, he would use VND17 million for some daily expenses and put the remaining VND100 million into a bank.

Visiting the new house of Phuong, vice chairman of Hoa My Commune People's Committee, Le Thi Ut, expressed her thanks to Dantri Newspaper and kind donors for their support.

"Dantri's programme to help build new houses for disadvantaged people is very meaningful," she said. "It will be very difficult for families like Phuong's to be able to build a new house on their own. They now have a safe place to live which will help improve their lives."

The family of Nguyen Thanh Quang in Dong Thap's Chau Thanh District has also built a new 60-square-metre house with VND50 million donated by Dantri's house building programme and VND74 million donated by the newspaper's readers.

Quang, who has been struggling with the Hepatitis B Virus over the past 10 years, can now do nothing to earn money while having run out of money due to the large cost of treatment.

The 45-year-old man had been living with his wife and their 12-year-old daughter in an eight-square-metre tent that could collapse anytime but could not afford to build a new home.

"With this new house, we no longer have to worry during bad weather," Quang said. "Thank you so much for your valuable support."

Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper has launched a programme to build 100 new houses for disadvantaged people nationwide.

The programme was launched after PM Pham Minh Chinh called for support to help replace all deteriorating houses for low-income people between 2024-2025.

Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, Dao Ngoc Dung, has also asked for joint efforts from organisations and individuals to build new houses for disadvantaged people nationwide by the end of 2025.
