Despite weak health, Vo Thi Luu, 70, still works as a scrap metal collector to support her two sons living with her in a deteriorating house in Tay Hoa District.

The poor mother, who is deaf and struggling with poor health, said that she became a single mum at the age of 33 after divorcing her husband.

"I've had to try to raise my four children all by myself doing various odd jobs," she said. "My eldest son Duong Trung has suffered schizophrenia since he was small and has needed constant care. After my two daughters got married and left the house, my youngest son, Duong Tan Duc became the breadwinner of the family. Duc used to work hard to help me support his disabled brother."

Luu works as a scrap metal collector to support her two sons.

However, Duc had a serious traffic accident which caused him traumatic brain injuries while returning home from work when he was 27 years old. Although he was saved, he suffered from serious physical and mental problems that have left him disabled for the past 13 years, the mother recalled.

After selling everything she had to save her son, the weakening mother still has to take care of her two disabled sons.

"Duong, who is now 47 years old, and Duc, 40, all need my help with their meals and personal hygiene," she said. "Despite my weak health, I still have to try to take care of them. And I'm very worried that someday my health won't allow me to. I can’t sleep well at night when I think about their future when I die."

Talking about Luu's family, the vice chairman of Hoa My Dong Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Ba Hoa, said that this is among the most difficult cases in the area.

"The two sons now receive a monthly allowance of VND540,000 (USD18) each," the official said. "We also provide them some support and gifts during special occasions, but they need more help."
