HCM City has opened a chain of mini supermarkets where the poor can experience free shopping for the Tet Lunar New Year Festival.

Pham Minh Tuan, vice chairman of the municipal Fatherland Front Committee, said that six zero-dong mini supermarkets would be set up in various districts between January 24-27.

The supermarket chain is expected to serve around 15,000 disadvantaged people in the city.

Roughly VND7.2 billion (USD293,877) has been spent in the chain.

Lucky draws and traditional folk games will also be organised at the mini-supermarkets.

A customer, Phung Thi Lan from Tan Binh District said that she felt moved by the support provided by the zero mini-supermarket model.

Each person is granted a voucher worth VND400,000 to use at the mini-supermarkets.
