A rare pangolin has been found giving birth in a tree hollow near a residential area in the southern central province of Binh Dinh.

On September 14, Nguyen Thanh Tuan, from Nhon Phu Ward in Quy Nhon City, heard dogs barking behind the house. He went to check and discovered a pangolin and its baby lying in a tree hollow at the foot of the nearby mountain.

He took the two animals to his home to look after them.

The two Javan pangolins are critically endangered and belong to Group IB. The mother, weighing 2.8 kilos, has an injured tail and has refused to eat for three days. Meanwhile, the baby, whose gender has not yet been identified, weighs 0.05 kilos. Its umbilical cord has become dry but not yet fallen off.

The pangolins have been handed over to Tuy Phuoc District’s Forest Management Board.
