The terraced fields of Mu Cang Chai District in the northern province of Yen Bai are glittering in silky white during the flood season between May and July.

This is also the time local people start planting rice for a new crop. As many as 90 percent of residents in Mu Cang Chai are from the H’mong ethnic group who have cultivated on these terraced fields for centuries.

The terraced fields in Mu Cang Chai are sprawled over the communes of De Xu Phinh, Che Cu Nha and La Pan Tan and cover over 330 hectares.

The terraces here have been recognised as a national heritage site since 2007, and a special national site since 2020.

The terraced fields in La Pan Tan are known as the most beautiful in the area, thanks to the special terrain and fertile soil.

The site has attracted lots of visitors, especially during the flood season between May and July, and during rice harvesting season in late September and early October.
