The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting said that provinces including Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Hoa Binh, Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Phu Tho, Bac Kan, Cao Bang, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An would continue to face rain on October 2 with average rainfall of between 5-30mm.
"Flash floods may occur in areas close to rivers and streams in the coming hours while landslides will continue to hit mountainous and hilly areas," the centre warned.
Heavy rain has hit several northern localities from September 29 to October 1, causing severe flooding and landslides in Lao Cai, Ha Giang, and Yen Bai.
In Ha Giang, a serious landslide triggered by heavy rain occurred on September 29 on National Highway 2 running through Viet Vinh commune of Bac Quang district, leaving four dead, nine injured and two missing.
The landslide also damaged 15 houses and prompted the urgent evacuation of 202 households.
Routes connecting Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, and other neighbouring localities have been blocked while rescue forces are still working at the site.
Yen Bai Province also suffered severe flooding on Tuesday due to rising floods on the Thao River, forcing many families in Yen Bai City to leave their homes during the night.
In Lao Cai's Bat Xat district, floods have left 73 houses submerged. Widespread landslides occured in Sapa Town, leading to traffic congestion.
