Many people in the northern-central province of Nghe An's Dien Chau District have flocked to collect clams which were washed ashore at a local beach by strong waves during the Storm Soulik.

A one-kilometre-long beach in Dien Trung Commune was covered with clams on the morning of September 20.

Local people called on one another to come and collect the shellfish.

A local woman, Nguyen Thi Luu, said that she collected some eight kilos of clams in just two hours.

"That's enough for our family," she said. "Many of the clams have died so we'll have to carefully select them before cooking. We usually use them to make soup, stir fry or steam, which all taste good and are very nutritious."

According to local people, clams usually appear on the beach following storms, but this time the numbers were huge.

Storm Soulik has weakened into a tropical low-pressure zone after hitting central coastal localities on September 19, causing flooding and high waves throughout the region.
