Storm Soulik, the fourth storm to have hit Vietnam this year, slammed the central region on Thursday afternoon, causing widespread downpours.

Flood water rises in a stream in Quang Binh Province

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorology, the storm started hitting provinces from Quang Binh to Quang Tri at 2 pm on September 19 with wind speeds of between 50 and 61 km per hour. Soulik is forecasted to move deeper inland in the central provinces in the next three hours before weakening into a tropical depression when it moves to Laos.

Central coastal localities from Nghe An to Danang would see wind speeds of between 39 and 61 km per hour, which may cause sea waves to rise to 2 to 4 metres.

Provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri may experience heavy rain from Thursday afternoon until Friday, with an average rainfall of 100-250mm and over 400mm in some places.

Central localities have been warned of flash floods and landslides during the storm.
