Statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development showed that Typhoon Yagi, one of the strongest to hit Vietnam in decades, had destroyed or swept away 3,269 fish farming cages in Quang Ninh Province and Haiphong City.

In Quang Ninh's Ha Long Bay, Van Don District and Mong Cai City, thousands of tonnes of fish were released into the sea from broken cages during the storm, which has attracted people to fish.

Nguyen Doan Hoang said that he went fishing here with a group of friends and caught dozens of kilos a day.

"They used to be raised in cages so they're slow and easy to be caught," Hoang said. "I've caught lots of groupers today, which have a quite high value at around VND250,000 per kilo."

"We can easily sell the fish to traders for VND200,000 per kilo but we've decided to sell them to local farmers for half that price so that they can continue to raise the fish," Hoang said. "The farmers had already suffered great losses."

Van Don District authorities reported that Typhoon Yagi caused losses of over VND2.20 trillion to local fish farmers.

Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee are planning to issue support policies to fish farmers in the area so that they can resume farming activities.
