Local authorities arrived at the A7 Apartment Building in Hoang Mai District at 8 pm on September 6 to ask 160 residents from 48 households to move out temporarily.
Most residents went to their relatives and friends or hotels. Others who were elderly or had financial difficulties were evacuated to the Tan Mai Primary School site, 300 metres away.
A resident, Dang Thanh Tung, 27, said that he took his wife and children to seek shelter at the house of his parents-in-law while he and his parents stayed in a local hotel.
Ten classrooms have been arranged to host the evacuated residents at the Tan Mai Primary School.
Some food and necessities have also been prepared.
Hoang Thi Mai, 78, said she and her 80-year-old husband had lived at the A7 building for over 40 years. The building has deteriorated badly, and they were always worried when storms arrived.
"We feel much safer when being evacuated here," she said. "I want to thank local authorities for their support.
By 6 pm on Friday, authorities in five northern coastal localities of Quang Ninh, Haiphong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, and Ninh Binh had evacuated over 37,180 people from vulnerable areas.
According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecast7, at 7 am on September 7, Yagi was about 150km off the northern coast of Vietnam, packing winds of between 150 and 166kph near its centre.
In the next three hours, Yagi will move west-northwest at about 15-20kph, approaching the coastline of Quang Ninh and Haiphong.
