The Ministry of Transport has just approved a VND2 trillion (USD78.74 million) project to expand bridges and tunnels on National Road 1.

The Deo Ngang Tunnel will be expanded to ease congestion.

They include upgrades and expansions to the Xuong Giang, Gianh, and Quan Hau bridges and the Deo Ngang Tunnel.

Xuong Giang Bridge, crossing the Thong River in northern Bac Giang province, will be expanded to a total roadbed width of 33 metres.

The 2.1-kilometre Gianh Bridge in the central Quang Binh Province will be expanded with an adjacent 12-metre-wide bridge, making it a six-lane bridge of 20.50 metres wide that allows the highest speed of 80km/h.

Similarly, the 1.5-kilometre Quan Hau Bridge in Quang Binh will be expanded by adding a new 12-metre-wide bridge.

Deo Ngang Tunnel, which connects north-central Ha Tinh and central Quang Binh provinces, will be upgraded to nearly three kilometres. The access road leading to the tunnel will be expanded to four lanes with a roadbed width of 20.50 metres, allowing a speed limit of 80 km/h.

The projects are expected to ease the frequent traffic congestion affecting the current bridges and tunnels.

The transport ministry estimates that these projects will cost approximately VND 2 trillion, sourced from the state budget, and will be completed within 2025.
