HCM City has grown 84 tamarind trees on Le Loi Street, rejecting an initial proposal to use covered walkways.
The trees are 4-5 metres high each with a diameter of 12 centimetres. Workers are making iron frames to protect the trees.
Green space has also been arranged on the road’s median strip.
Vu Van Diep, director of the HCM City Infrastructure Technical Management Centre, said that the central strip also had zoned areas for pedestrians.
Large trees on the street were previously removed for the construction of the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro route.
The city Department of Planning and Architecture proposed putting up a corrugated steel roof stretching over the pavements of Le Loi Street which would have cost VND30 billion.
However, the recommendation stirred controversy. Some experts said that the roof would affect the open space of the street.
The 800-metre street, linking the Saigon Opera House to Ben Thanh Market is a relatively busy commercial road.
