A representative from Dantri/Dtinews Online Newspaper has just come to the Hanoi-based National Hospital of Ophthalmology to transfer a donation of VND 231,447,307 which readers sent to help Ngan Van Thuan and his wife Nguyen Thi Thanh cover treatment for their one-year-old daughter Ngan Thi Dao.
Receiving the donations, Thanh said that they were very moved to receive such large support from the community.
"Many people have called to express their sympathy and sent money to my bank account," Thanh said. "Thank you so much for your kind help."
The mother said that they have so far received over 300 million in donations from the public. Her daughter has just undergone surgery which doctors hope will save her right eye.
The poor couple who are from Thai ethnic group and come from the remote mountainous district of Quynh Nhai, had sold their farm to raise money to pay the hospital fees for their small child. However, doctors said that the treatment would be long and costly and they have run out of money.
Doctor Pham Minh Chau from the National Hospital of Ophthalmology said that Dao has retinoblastoma in both eyes but the left eye is more serious.
