As of August 13, natural disasters, mostly landslides and flash floods, also caused damage worth over VND2 trillion (USD79.34 million).

The northern mountainous region reported the most significant human losses, with 67 deaths and 13 missings.

In July alone, more than 40 residents were reported dead and missing due to rainstorms and landslides nationwide.

A fatal landslide triggered by intense rainfall occurred on July 13 on a National Road 34 section in the northern Ha Giang Province, claiming the lives of 11 people and leaving four injured.

Landslides and flash floods also left 20 dead and missing in the two neighbouring provinces of Son La and Dien Bien at the end of July.

Heavy rains have continued in the northern region over the past week, damaging five houses, dozens of roads, and over 100 hectares of crops and killing nearly 1,000 poultry and cattle.

On August 13, two people died, and two others remained missing in landslides and flash floods in Vinh Phuc Province.

According to the National Centre for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, the La Niña weather pattern might impact the country starting this August, which could result in powerful storms, heavy rains, floods, flash floods, landslides, and dam failures, posing significant risks to production, livelihoods, property, and the safety of residents.

A recent directive signed by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked ministries and local authorities nationwide to proactively adopt prevention and control measures against natural disasters in the upcoming period, as calamities have become increasingly unusual and unpredictable in the year to date.
