The population of Hanoi's central districts have rapidly grown over recent years, putting immense strain on infrastructure and services.

Dinh Thi Tuyet Dung, Vice Chairwoman of Thanh Xuan District's Thuong Dinh Ward, said that over the past seven years, the district population has increased by more than 10,000 people to 26,100 people in nearly 6,700 households.

The district's population is expected to rise to around 40,000 people in some years to come when many real estate projects in the locality begin accepting residents.

Vinh Tuy Ward in Hai Ba Trung District now has 40,000 people and the figure is forecast to reach around 80,000 in the years.

The major roads of Lac Trung and Minh Khai in the ward are already hugely congested and are likely to worsen given the additional influx of new residents.

Nguyen Canh Quang, Vice Chairman of Lang Ha Ward in Dong Da District, said that over the past decade, the local population has grown by 10,000 to 30,200 people, excluding 7,000 residents including stuents and workers that also live in the ward.

According to a recent report from the Hanoi Department of Population and Family Planning, Hanoi's population grows by an estimated 200,000 people a year, equal to the population of an entire a district.

In addition, Hanoi also is home to 120,000 births annually.

By late 2014, Hanoi's population had reached 7.2 million, with an annual population growth rate of 2.74%.
