Vietnamese canoeists take 10 golds at Asia, Southeast Asia Championships

Vietnamese athletes have delivered an impressive performance, winning 10 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze medals at the 2025 Asian Canoe Sprint Junior & U23 Championships & 2025 South East Asian Canoe Sprint Championships held in Thailand from June 9 to 15.

At the Southeast Asian Championships alone, Vietnam secured 3 gold bagged by Pham Hong Quan in the men’s C1 500m,Nguyen Thi Huong – Diep Thi Huong in the women’s C2 500m, and Ma Thi Thuy – Nguyen Thi Huong in the women’s C2 200m.

Vietnamese athletes showcased strength, resilience, and competitive spirit, facing tough opponents from leading regional nations such as Thailand and Indonesia. Despite competing in the major tournaments within a single week, the team maintained peak physical condition and consistent performance, reflecting their meticulous preparation in terms of technique, fitness, and mental readiness.

In addition to seasoned athletes, a number of young talents stood out, including Diep Thi Huong, Nguyen Hong Thai, Ma Thi Thuy, Phung Ngoc Diem, Mac Thi Thanh Thuy, Ma Thi Dieu Ngoc, and Tran Thi Quynh, all of whom contributed significantly to the team’s success.

A historic milestone was also achieved in the women's quadruple sculls, where the Vietnamese team earned a silver medal at the Asian U23 Championship, Vietnam’s first-ever medal in this category. The quartet behind this breakthrough achievement comprises Hoang Thi Huong, Bui Mai Hanh, Hoang Thi Lam, and Nguyen Thi Mai.

The achievements serve as an important stepping stone for Vietnamese canoeist as they prepare for major upcoming competitions, most notably the 33rd SEA Games, scheduled to be held in Thailand thí December.

Significantly, canoeing remains one of the key sports included in the official competition programme by the host country for the upcoming SEA Games, providing a golden opportunity for Vietnam to assert their regional dominance.
