HCM City warns of 122 flood-prone locations

HCM City traffic police have warned of 122 locations at risk of flooding during heavy rain and high tides, while stepping up traffic control to reduce congestion and accidents.

The HCM City Traffic Police Division said on October 6 that 83 locations were vulnerable to flooding caused by heavy rain and slow drainage, while another 39 were at risk from high tides.

Rain-related flood risks are spread across many major roads and intersections, including Bay Hien Intersection, Ly Thuong Kiet, Tran Van Giau, Vinh Loc, Nguyen Van Khoi and Phan Van Khai streets and National Highway 50.

In eastern HCM City, warnings cover sections of Vo Nguyen Giap, Mai Chi Tho, To Ngoc Van, Nguyen Xien and Le Van Viet streets. In the south, vulnerable roads include Nguyen Van Linh, Nguyen Huu Tho, Huynh Tan Phat, Le Van Luong and Nguyen Binh.

Areas at risk of tidal flooding are concentrated along low-lying roads near rivers and canals, including Tran Xuan Soan, Nguyen Thi Thap, Huynh Tan Phat, Nguyen Huu Tho, Nguyen Binh and Ha Huy Giap streets.

Traffic police have stepped up patrols and deployed officers at major roads, intersections and other congestion-prone areas during peak hours to direct traffic and respond to incidents.

Authorities warned that heavy rain during the evening rush hour could reduce visibility, make roads slippery and conceal hazards beneath floodwaters, increasing the risk of accidents and congestion.

Residents were advised to monitor weather, tide and traffic information and choose alternative routes where necessary.

Motorists should not attempt to cross roads where water is more than halfway up a motorcycle wheel or approaching a car's door sill. Flooded sections with strong currents or where the road surface cannot be seen should be avoided entirely.

Police also warned road users to watch for uncovered manholes and submerged obstacles and to stay away from electrical wires, utility poles, street lights and billboards.
